October 25, 1997 marks the day in American history when 136 years ago the construction of the USS Monitor commenced in Greenpoint. A day of events begins at 10 am with Captain Robert Danielski and his 14th Regiment at a "Living History Civil War Camp Site" set on the grounds of Automotive High School on Bedford opposite McCarren Park.

The Church of the Ascension, located at 127 Kent Street, will open its doors at 6PM. The Church was constructed with funds from Thomas Fitch Rowland, the builder of the Thomas Fitch Rowland, the builder of the USS Monitor. There will be Greenpoint historical exhibits and a concert of Civil War songs. Refreshments will be served. Admission charge: Five dollars for adults and children are free. Proceeds to go toward the Church restoration.
